Only a Matter of Time

Every healthcare facility likes to think their network security is top notch and that ransomware has no chance against its IT infrastructure. Unfortunately, the human element adds a dangerous unknown to the equation which increase our chances of being compromised by a healthcare ransomware attack from a matter of “if” to that of “when.”

The Risk of Data Leakage

As ransomware attacks continue to increase, the risk of data leakage, either through failure to pay or other means increases as well. This puts healthcare organizations can be costly to both the bottom line and from a reputation standpoint.

This is a diagram showing how much data is leaked when healthcare facilities are not using a HIPPA compliant secure texting app. Contents of diagram. Was data leaked? 72% say yes, 13% say no, and 15% unknown.

The HHS Cybersecurity Program examined 48 ransomware incidents in the United States Healthcare Sector to determine if data had been leaked. The chart above breaks down those findings.

10 Steps to Fighting Ransomware

  • Turn off Internet access through Firewall including VPN access.
  • Disconnect the email server, then find and remove all ransomware emails.
  • Lock all User Accounts on Active Directory so that users can no longer access the computers to block spreading of ransomware.
  • Expire all Passwords (most importantly the IT Admin Passwords).
  • Use Cloud-based Secure Texting service on Personal Smartphones to carry on care coordination. Use Texting, Images, Audio and Video to start collaborating on patient care to reduce errors in the absence of access to EHR.

  • Clinicians should create secure texting conversation threads around patient names to capture documentation that can be included back in the EHR after the ransomware crisis.
  • Re-image computers infected by ransomware.
  • Turn on Active Directory and allow access to EHR internally.
  • Turn on Internet access through Firewall and email server. Monitor emails.
  • Now sync all patient centric conversations from the Secure Texting service with EHR.
