After-Hours Answering for Home Health Agencies
QliqSOFT's AI Voice Agents are an AI medical answering service for home health. The agent answers your line in your agency's name, day and night, sorts clinical calls from logistical ones, and connects each caller to the right person on your live on-call schedule, such as the on-call nurse or intake. Every call is logged to the patient's thread.
The calls your line takes after five
Home health calls after hours are about the episode, and most of them can't wait until morning.
- The Friday 4:50 referral. A discharge planner with a patient going home tonight and three agencies on her list.
- The dressing came loose. A question the on-call nurse can answer in two minutes, if it reaches her with the patient's name and wound location.
- Tomorrow's visit. A patient calling to cancel or reschedule, which the agency needs to know tonight, not when the nurse arrives at an empty house.
- The new patient's family. A daughter who can't find the medication list from today's start of care.
Voicemail gives all four the same answer, and the referral may go to the next agency on the list.
How a call moves
The agent answers and sorts. Every call is answered in your agency's name. The agent separates clinical concerns from logistical ones, resolves the logistical questions it can, and gathers who is calling, about which patient, and how urgent it is.
The agent routes by your live schedule. Clinical calls go to a human clinician. The agent checks your QliqCHAT on-call schedule and connects the caller to whoever is actually covering: the on-call nurse for a clinical concern, intake for a referral. The person who picks up has the context already captured.
Every call is documented. The full call is logged to the patient's thread in QliqCHAT, so the morning team starts from what happened overnight. Callers who would rather text can switch, and the conversation continues in the same thread.
The rules behind the phone
The home health Conditions of Participation require a clinical manager to be available during all operating hours (42 CFR 484.105), and CMS defines operating hours as every hour the agency is open and providing care. The agency must also promptly alert the physician to changes in a patient's condition (42 CFR 484.60(c)(1)). A logged call is the evidence that someone answered. Home health after-hours coverage requirements covers the rules in full.
Answering, not triage
This page is about answering and routing calls. If your question is how to cover clinical triage at night, with your own nurse, a contracted triage service or both, see after-hours triage for home health agencies. The agent works with whichever model you run.
What it is not
It is not a nurse triage service. The agent does not assess symptoms or make clinical decisions; it captures the concern and connects the caller to your clinician. It does not replace your on-call staff. It makes sure the call reaches whoever your policy says is covering, with the context to act on it. QliqSOFT is HIPAA compliant, with a BAA included.
What is an AI medical answering service?
An AI medical answering service uses a voice agent, instead of a human operator, to answer a healthcare organization's calls. In home health, it answers in the agency's name at any hour, separates clinical calls from logistical ones, and connects clinical calls to the clinician on call. QliqSOFT's agent also logs every call to the patient's thread.
Do home health agencies need 24-hour phone coverage?
The federal Conditions of Participation require a clinical manager to be available during all operating hours, which CMS defines as every hour the agency is open and providing care. Some states require more: New York requires certified home health agencies to offer professional telephone consultation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Check your state rule and your accreditor.
Can an AI answering service take a referral after hours?
Yes. The agent answers the referral call in your agency's name, captures who is referring and for which patient, and connects the caller to intake on your live on-call schedule, so the referral reaches a person tonight rather than a voicemail on Monday.
Is an AI answering service HIPAA compliant?
It has to be, because callers share patient names and symptoms. Any outside service that handles those calls is a business associate under HIPAA and needs a business associate agreement with your agency. QliqSOFT is HIPAA compliant, with a BAA included.
