Missed Visit Reduction

Confirm tomorrow’s visits tonight.

A visit that does not happen costs an hour. A 30-day period that closes one visit short of its threshold is paid under a different model entirely. Missed visit reduction is about the gap between the care plan and what actually happened.

Why it matters

A cancelled visit costs an hour. A missed threshold costs the period.

  • ✓The visits that go missing are the routine ones on good days, not the urgent ones.
  • ✓A cancellation that reaches one nurse’s phone has not reached the schedule.
  • ✓The clinician was already scheduled and the route already built, so the hour was paid for either way.
  • ✓A period has days left to act in, if anyone knows in time.
Confirmation call goes to voicemail→Confirmation goes out by text the day before
Family cancels to one nurse’s phone→Patient confirms, reschedules, or flags with one reply
Nurse drives to an empty house→Nurse knows before driving
Period closes one visit short→The period still has days left in it

What is staying put costing you?

What are your near-miss periods costing you?

A 30-day period that closes one visit short of its threshold is not paid slightly less, it is paid under a different model. How the LUPA threshold works covers the mechanism and what pushes a period under.

This is exposure, not recovery. It counts periods that came in one visit short of their threshold, on the assumption that the missing visit was planned. Periods that were correctly low utilization are not losses, and no visit should be added to clear a threshold.

Common questions
How do you reduce missed visits in home health?

Most missed visits are not refusals. They are visits nobody confirmed: the patient was out, the family cancelled to one nurse’s phone, or the appointment was forgotten. Confirming the day before, in a channel the family already uses, turns an empty house into a message that arrives while there is still time to act on it.

Can patients confirm a home health visit by text?

Yes. Quincy sends a two-way text confirmation, and the patient or family member confirms, reschedules, or flags a problem with one reply. There is no app to install and no portal password, which matters for older patients and for the adult child managing care from another state.

What happens if a home health period falls below the LUPA threshold?

The 30-day period is paid the national per-visit amount by discipline instead of the case-mix adjusted payment for the period. Thresholds run from 2 to 6 visits and differ by case-mix group, so one missed visit can change how an entire period is paid. Our guide to LUPA in home health covers the mechanism.

Do families need an app to use it?

No. The confirmation arrives as a text, and the reply is a text. Nothing to download, nothing to log into.

Confirm the visit. Keep the period.
